How We Teach

We know that there is no single perfect or universal method for learning a second or an additional language. Teaching methods, approaches and techniques depend on several factors such as the type of instruction (individual or group), age of participants, the content being taught, the learner’s needs, the learning environment, the character of each student individually, and many other factors.

  • Communicative Teaching Method and Total Physical Response

Learning German at our school is based on the Communicative Language Teaching – a method of learning that evenly develops all language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Classroom activities are characterized by trying to produce meaningful and real communication at all levels. As a result lessons are more learner-centred.

Total Physical Response (TPR) is a method that attempts to center attention to encouraging learners to listen and respond to the spoken target language commands of their teachers. In other words, TPR is a language-teaching method built around the coordination of speech and action; it attempts to teach language through physical (motor) activity – this method is mostly applied in language teaching in a kindergarten class.

  • Our classroom activities include but are not limited to

    • Activities focusing on fluency and accuracy

    • Meaningful practice (language control is provided but students need to make meaningful choices when carrying out practice)

    • Communicative practice (real information is exchanged and the language use is not completely predictable)

    • Generating questions that promote higher order thinking but use varying levels of linguistic complexity depending upon the proficiency level of each student

    • Mechanical practice (repetition drills and substitution drills designed to practice use of particular grammatical or other item)

    • Use of songs

    • Having students work in cooperative learning groups

    • Assigning individual work with clear guidelines and expectations

    • Planning activities that involve Total Physical Response

    • Including role-playing activities in a variety of content areas.

  • We teach our students

    • How to use language for a range of different purposes

    • When to use language appropriately for written as opposed to spoken communication

    • How to produce different types of texts.
