On behalf of the committee and staff of the GSS, I welcome all who are new to our school and welcome back all who are returning. I am looking forward to the 2018 school year at German Saturday School, which is my second year as principal at our school. I am excited to get to know you or to continue to get to know you better.
Each year brings positive change. This includes a few additions to our staff. We are delighted to welcome Amra Polutak as our new Foundation teacher, Joseph Zielinski as our new Year 1 teacher, Julika Pursche as our new Year 5 teacher, Lisa-Marie as our new Year 6 teacher and Nikolaus Gerold as our new Year 8/9 teacher. We are also welcoming Ann-Kristin Hawken, who will join the Foundation class as an assistant teacher. We wish them a successful and joyful school year. You can find the complete list of teachers and classes here.
As a community language school, the GSS offers a language education programme to students from Kinder, Foundation right through to prep VCE, that is complementary to that provided by mainstream schools and the Victorian School of Languages, in alignment with the Australian Curriculum F – 10. Our year levels can also be aligned with the Common European Framework of References (CEFR) which consists of six proficiency levels, ranging from A1 for beginners to C2 for those who master the language. Like last year, we will offer our students again to sit the Goethe Zertifikat A 1+2 (Fit in Deutsch) exams in Years 7 to 9 and the Deutsche Sprachdiplom 1 (DSD 1) in Year 10/prep VCE. I am proud to say that in recent years our passing rate for the Goethe Zertifikat exams has been 98% and for the DSD 1 exams 100%!
I will work diligently with the teachers to make sure our students are exposed to curriculum and instruction that is both engaging and challenging. Our ultimate goal is to develop our students’ communicative abilities and competencies in the four traditional language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and to instil in them a love for the German language and culture by offering programs that showcase German traditions and customs.
Furthermore, a variety of activities occur at the GSS, inside and outside the instructional day. Examples include: Poetry Competition, Open Day, Family Day, Book Market and Family Evening. So make sure to regularly check our calendar!
We will also continue to explore the options given to us by the PASCH – Schools: Partners for the Future, namely participating in cultural projects and competitions, networking and study scholarships.
Finally, as parents, you play an integral role as a part of this community in the education of your child. Your involvement in your child’s education will help your child achieve more success and have a positive outlook on school. Please be sure to read the newsletters and calendar that are on our website. Get to know your child’s teacher and stay updated on classroom and school events. I’d also like to encourage you to join our Parent Committee that actively supports our staff in providing our students with the best educational experience and learning opportunities possible.
It remains an honour and privilege to serve as your principal. Please stop by and say hello. Together, I know we will make this school year one of growth and achievement for all children.
I wish you and our entire school community a joyful and successful new school year.
